On Being A New Parent

Here’s the podcast conversation I had with Adam Purcell about becoming a new father. It was recorded when my son was around 4.5 months old. He’s just over 6 months old now. I talk a little bit about what we went through as parents in the first few months of his life.

I just wanted to add that even though the breastfeeding made it very hard for me to get any sleep (feeding every 2 hours, not every 1-1.5, as jj said), it was also an amazing thing to do. It’s incredible knowing that you can feed your baby from your own body, and a lovely bonding time. I have some very sweet memories of being up in the middle of the night feeding him and watching music videos on tv. If I were to do it over, I would probably express milk so that John could take over some of the feeding.

One minor correction: little jj’s birthday is actually on the 4th.

John was such an amazing support throughout this very difficult time. I don’t know what I would have done without him. He is a great daddy : )

    Hey J.J.

Just *discovered* your blog, interested in lasts years blogspot. Listening to your pod cast.

I am interested in -becoming a parent from a men’s perspective, it isn’t something you hear very often.

I have 5 children myself, sometimes had had baby blues for a few days post partum but wasn’t until my 5th that I had depression, and it wasn’t diagnosed until 11 months later, I think I was in denial for 6 months. I was embarrased and frustrated by my what I thought was a weakness, until I understood it. Finally seeked help and much better now.

You really had quite an experience, I think it is great that you share, it may help someone.

Best of luck with your son’s-catch you on twitter later!
