Well, the Earth Hour 2009 event happened last Saturday in 88 countries around the world. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who participated and from my point of view, to those who helped spread the Earth Hour message so widely through social media. From where I stood, it looked incredible!
I’m going to post more about Earth Hour social media of course, but I thought I’d post 3 of my favourite viral moments from Earth Hour now.
Twitter Trending Topics
Earth Hour related terms and tags reached the no. 1, no. 2 and no. 4 spot on the Twitter Trending Topics list during Earth Hour, and held the no. 1 spot for the WHOLE TIME Earth Hour rolled through all the different time zones around the world – from before it started in New Zealand to when it ended in the U.S.
digg.com
After Earth Hour (Monday Australian time), when Boston.com posted a series of interactive Earth Hour images, the link spread through Twitter and around the web like wildfire and also became the most popular item on digg.com. It was exciting to participate in that and see it happen. It happened so quickly! :)
Viral Video Chart
On the day of the event, Earth Hour videos made up 3 of the top 5 videos in this viral video chart. The Earth Hour 2009 video (see previous post) also took out the no. 1 spot for a 7 day period surrounding Earth Hour. This site scans several million blogs a day to see which online videos people are talking about the most. They count the number of times each video is linked to and the number of times each video is embedded.
This was all exciting stuff for a social media junkie working on the Earth Hour global team, and it’s just a small snapshot of all the incredible things that went on in social media for Earth Hour. More later!
Thanks again to everyone who participated. You Rock!
