Foursquare vs Gowalla. Too early to pick a winner, or have you decided?

Much is being said at the moment about the battle for early-ish users between location-based services Foursquare and Gowalla, so I won’t go over old ground by explaining how they work here. Explanations are not hard to come by.

What I will say is that I’ve been using Foursquare for a few months, ever since it became available in Sydney. I’ve also been using Gowalla more in the last couple of weeks, after installing it earlier but not really using it that much. I’ve decided to keep using both for a while to see how each develops and which one I like more over time. No doubt both of these services will develop a fair bit in the coming months, so is it perhaps a bit early to tell which one is going to be better?

foursquare

Gowalla has only recently added the ability to snap and upload photos from a location you’ve checked-in at, and also to make comments on other people’s posts. I like both of these features a lot, and it’s made me want to use Gowalla more, for now. Perhaps Foursquare will be thinking seriously about added features such as this.

I’ve noticed that in Foursquare, fewer people actually comment, or rather “shout” when they check-in somewhere. I wonder if this would change if there was the ability for people to comment on their posts? After all, it was the reply function of Twitter that really got that going in the early days.

gowalla

The whole Foursquare vs Gowalla debate that seems to be going on in the blogosphere reminds me of the days (not so long ago really) when people were debating between Pownce and Twitter, and whether there was room enough for both new services to survive. Needless to say, Pownce isn’t around anymore and Twitter has tens of millions of monthly users. I don’t think it was that Pownce was a bad service at all, in fact it had some really great features. It’s just that everyone was over on Twitter. Twitter had the momentum from early on. Eventually, that momentum carried it all the way to celebrities starting to us it, and consequently into the talk show circuit. The rest is history.

Will there be room enough for both Foursquare and Gowalla this time? I know, I know, there are others in the space too I here you say, but Foursquare and Gowalla are the two that are getting the most blog and column centimetres  for now.

What’s your take? Have you tried both? Which one do you prefer at the moment? Do you think they’ll both be able to survive? Which one are most of your social media friends using? Perhaps that’s the best measure.

  • Some good points. I am using both as well at the moment via the iPhone but I have a clear favorite. Gowalla. I am based in the UK and every time I am starting Foursquare and it does not find a spot it closes the app automatically again. So annoying. Maybe it is only my version but Gowalla is so much more user-friendly and has so many more spots here in the UK.
  • Yes, I've found that the latest version of Foursquare on iPhone crashes on me quite a bit. The version before didn't do that. As I said, I like the photos and comments features of Gowalla right now, but more of my local social media friends are on Foursquare right now.
  • Interesting that it crashes for you as well. I will uninstall it now and see whether it will work in a few weeks time.
Foursquare as a business seems to have more money behind it that is why I believe it be number one in the long run.
  • Most of my contacts from Australia and the US that are using one of the services are using Foursquare but I am currently living in Germany and Gowalla has much more activity (still not much). I was checking in on both but this quickly became a pain, especially on a 1st gen iPhone. I have currently decided to stick with Gowalla as the whole location based services are much more interesting with interaction (I already know where I am). I do like the 'mayor' idea in Foursquare and I hope that Gowalla integrates something similar. I am now waiting for more of my friends to show up on Gowalla.
  • Interesting that Gowalla has more activity in Germany than Foursquare. Yes, there's definitely more activity on Foursquare in Australia at the moment. True too, that it does take a while to update both. Sometimes I don't have time for that. No doubt there will be various services soon that allow you to update multiple location-based apps at the same time, and see activity as well.

Have you heard of http://www.booyah.com/ ? I am not affiliated, and it's currently only US based - but I think it'll blow the others away.
  • Thanks, I'll check it out. Seems like there's quite a bit of activity going on in terms of location-based apps, perhaps too much for very many to survive.

What also hasn't been mentioned yet is that Yelp (not in Australia, yet) has started allowing check-ins as well.

I've been using them both for a couple of months, here's my rub:

Gowalla feels like it was built by designers. Its good looking and feels nice to use. A little too fluffy sometimes with its toys and things, but pretty good.

Foursquare on the other hand feels like it was built by devs, who didn't polish it quite enough. It feels a bit rough around the edges.

So personally I think there's still room for a third contender to come along and blow them out of the water, something slicker than Foursquare, but with less fluff than Gowalla.

If I had to choose: Gowalla.
  • thats a good point. The most recent update to Foursquare is a bit of a fail for me - too many clicks to check in for example. Gowalla BIGGEST failing IMHO is the inability to hide your specific location when you create, for example your HOUSE. I like location based Social Networking, but a bit of privacy wouldn't go astray. Other than that, there is a lot to be said for both, but realistically, what's their model for growth? Look at what's happened with Brightkite. I suspect all of them will be subsumed or replaced by extended features in Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft or Google Services over time.
  • Thanks for your thoughts Gavin. Yes, I agree that you should be able to hide your specific location when you create a more personal spot, like your home. Foursquare has that advantage, Gowalla pins the location to the exact spot (if the gps is working properly), like it or not. Sometimes it's just good to put the suburb if you want, or wider even.

The difference between Brightkite (which I used quite a bit but got a bit bored of I guess) and these new services is that gaming aspect, with points, virtual good, badges, mayorship etc. It may keep people more interested as it develops, especially if there are more discounts and free real-world services to be exchanged; only time will tell.

Twitter has had location for a while but not many people use it, and you can't turn if off (I don't think) for each post. I think people prefer to use Foursquare or Gowalla and choose to crosspost if they want. Google Buzz also has location on the mobile app, but there seems to be something developing here that is more fun and interesting than just pinning your location. We'll have to see what Facebook comes up with. No doubt they'll come out with something pretty soon.
  • Thanks for your take sighmon, interesting. Yeah, I think Gowalla has set the pace in terms of design. As you know, Foursquare has recently updated with a new interface which in a bit more polished.

In terms of the toys, I think the plan would be for that to develop into a real economy of sorts - swapping and giving away virtual goods, and exchanged for goods in the real world too. I know at SXSW this year, some real goods were involved after checking in to events and venues.

Real goods in exchange for virtual checkins to real events! I like it.

I do like the Foursquare update, but it still seems a bit clumsy to check in for some reason. Probably just a mental flag in my mind because I don't like the UI as much.

One feature of Gowalla I really like is the turn-to-landscape mode to see a map of nearby spots.

    si.
  • I was running both a few months ago, and as far as feel, design and personality goes, Gowalla was the clear winner for me. But it also became rapidly clear that almost all of my online contacts were slowly adopting 4square and almost none of them were on Gowalla, so I dropped it.

Now you've inspired me to give it another chance. See you on Gowalla! :-)
  • Yes, I had the a similar experience. Recently more people I know have started using Gowalla though. It's still true for me that more people I know locally are on Foursquare.
