Thanks Sedge, yes we do seem to be losing the ability to turn this stuff off too. It's becoming a 24/7 thing. There used to be that promise of having more leisure time with new technology but we seem to have less. Many people are now online and responding at all hours, to people in all time zones.

Not only that, the lines between work and play are blurring more than ever. Many people use these communication tools for both. If you are online, you are available for both? How can people tell?

Good post JJ. Clearly any new technology can be used for constructive, destructive, or diversionary purposes. I do however wonder what it's all doing to our brains, and whether its having any impact on the way we think? I can't help but feel something is a little wayward when I see everyone at bus-stops, coffee shops, bars etc., all heads down and thumbs flying, ceaselessly checking for updated posts, and all the attendant chirps, pips, buzzes and vibrations that come with new message alerts. It seems we are becoming a society of fidgeters. At least we're not smoking, I guess.

I would have thought illiteracy and big-money lobbyists were the main threats to democracy, but there you go...
