Social networking is now the fastest growing mobile web activity.

U.S. social media usage on mobile devices is up, way up, according to a new study by ComScore. The study determined that social networking is the fastest growing activity by people using web enabled mobile devices, for both application and browser access.

mobile social networks

Out of the 69.6 million people who used mobile apps for the 3 month period ending in April, 14.5 million accessed social networks. This is a 240% increase from the previous year.

In addition, out of the 73 million people who used mobile browsers, 30 million used social networks through a browser. This is a 90% increase from the previous year.

When combined with the finding early this year, that mobile web usage grew by 110% in the U.S. last year and 148% worldwide, it’s obvious that mobile social networking is going to continue to experience strong growth for the foreseeable future, and not just in the U.S. The development of mobile tablet devices such as iPads is certainly going to contribute to the trend too.

How often do you access social networks via mobile rather than fixed line these days? With me, I’d say it would be about 20-30%, perhaps more. It’s certainly increased since I started using location-based services such as Foursquare.

The iPhone and other smart phones have transformed the way we communicate with each other, and apps just make it easier to be mobile & social. The statistics you've highlighted show how much more mainstream these devices and social media as a whole have become. Anecdotally, a lot of government & corporate employees are banned from using Facebook at work, so they go out for “Facebook” smoko breaks. When Facebook's location tab goes live – I'm sure we'll see these stats go up again. The NY Times also highlighted a trend to use iphones more for data/social than calls! http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/14/technology/pe...

The login system dosent like my mobile much.

I would say that the mobile is my primary means of access social networks because I can do it while on the road, travelling on the bus, in a cafe, waiting at a takeaway place. All those little bits if time, that previously would have been full of waiting and doing nothing.

Thanks for the NYTimes link Tip, and for the thoughtful comment. Yes, it'll be interesting to see how many Facebook users start using the new location feature when it launches. Given that Facebook has around 500 million users now, even if it's a small percentage, that's still going to be a lot of people!

Sorry about the mobile login not being friendly, I'll look into that. According to stats, around 15% of visitors here are viewing via mobile device (mostly iPhone).

Sounds like I use my mobile in a similar way to you, in terms of using social networks. Those moments of waiting around lend themselves well to a quick look at Twitter, Facebook or Foursquare to see where people are, what they are doing and saying don't they.
